Here are 2 potential job ideas I have been kicking around & praying about. I want to get people's opinions.
1) Elder companion: I have been surronded by older adults my entire life. Growing up, I was lucky to have my extended family as my neighbors. My mom's parents lived next door, my maternal great-grandparents lived 2 houses up the road, and the majority of neighborhood was made up of great-aunts/uncles, cousins, etc. I have also primarily worked with this population for the last 4 years at Duke. I believe the older generation has a lot of wit & wisdom to share with the younger generations. I also think I have the patience & compassion to do the job. Now let me be very clear here - I DO NOT MEAN elder companion is terms of personal hygiene; I want to be a NON-MEDICAL companion.
2) Middle School Science teacher: Many of you are probably wondering if I am crazy, but middle school kinda appeals to me. While we were at the beach, discussing & finalizing my decision to leave Duke, the N &O ran an article about the lack of science teachers in NC. I have been around science my entire life - hey maybe I should teach science to older adults (ha-ha :).
But seriously, last August at the leadership summit at Hope I was really moved by a speaker named Marcus Buckingham who discussed discovering what it is you are passionate about doing & then put that strength to work. I discovered that I am passionate, enjoy & derive energy from educating others. I really enjoy seeing the light bulb go off in someone else'shead when they understand/learn something. I think this is because I enjoy the feeling I get when the light bulb goes off in my own head!

Wow, from what I know of you, you would be great at both these jobs. I guess you would need to consider all the pros and cons of each- make a list. The money, the time, benefits (insurance), emotional investment (especially with the elderly), safety (ok, that's the mommy in me talking and I'm thinking of my days in middle school), etc. I'll be praying for this big decision!
